Moscow blasts claims about Syrian refugees being in danger as ‘absurd’

Earlier, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said that the return of refugees to Syria was still dangerous

SVETLOGORSK /Kaliningrad Region/, August 15. /TASS/. Claims that the current situation in Syria is too dangerous for the refugees’ return are absurd, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated during Wednesday’s press briefing.

"International institutions and the international community all take part in the evacuation of White Helmets, while peaceful existence is returning to Syria. And the return of civilians to Syria, of refugees who want to come back - everyone, or at least the majority of people distance themselves from it or even say that it’s too early, it’s not safe," Zakharova said.

"It’s an interesting story: when these civilians were in Syria, sponsoring various regional Western militant groups, it was safe for them [Syrian citizens], but now returning to their home country at their own will is a dangerous process. It’s just absurd," the top diplomat said.

Earlier, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said that the return of refugees to Syria is still dangerous, because the war there continues. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that such a statement shows "lack of awareness", and that there is no military activity in a vast part of Syrian territory.
