Russia sees efforts to establish the US-North Korean and inter-Korean dialogue and the agreements on solving problems on the Korean Peninsula in a positive light
WASHINGTON, June 28. /TASS/. Russia sees efforts to establish the US-North Korean and inter-Korean dialogue and the agreements on solving problems on the Korean Peninsula in a positive light. However, under the current circumstances, it is necessary to ease military and political tensions and tackle issues by political and diplomatic means only, Russian Ambassador to the US Anatoly Antonov said on Thursday.
"We welcome the US-North Korean and inter-Korean dialogue and the agreements to solve problems on the Korean Peninsula, including the nuclear one. These positive developments are in line with the Russian-Chinese roadmap developed over a year ago, which provides for a comprehensive approach to the settlement and the parties’ gradual and simultaneous actions," he said at the conference in the US Department of State to mark 50 years since the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) was opened for signature.
"At the same time, we continue to realize that, in the current situation, it is necessary to ease military and political tensions. All countries should be willing to search for ways of solving the existing problems by political and diplomatic means only," Antonov said.
US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un met in Singapore on June 12. The two heads of state signed a joint document at the meeting. Pyongyang undertook a commitment to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula in return for Washington’s security guarantees. On June 22, the Pentagon announced the suspension of a series of military exercises with South Korea in accordance with the results of the Singapore summit.
