SOCHI, May 17./TASS/. Russia welcomes Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s decision to send a delegation to the UN to set up the constitutional committee, President Vladimir Putin said at talks with the Syrian leader on Thursday.
"The Syrian president has made the decision to send his part of a delegation to form the Constitutional Committee that is to work on Syria’s constitutional law. Russia welcomes this decision by the Syrian president and will be supporting it in every way, given the agreements reached during the Congress of the Syrian people held in Sochi several months ago," Putin said.
Putin said that at talks with the Syrian president, they had coordinated joint moves in fight against terrorism in Syria, "emphasizing major results the Syrian army has achieved to this respect, and came to the conclusion that a favorable situation exists at the present moment to bolster a political process".
Putin said that along with giving a boost to a political process, it is important "to take necessary steps towards rebuilding the Syrian economy, as well as settle long-pending difficult, but pressing humanitarian issues".
"We expect support from the United Nations and all countries that are interested in the settlement of the Syrian crisis," the Russian president said.
