LOS ANGELES, November 11. /TASS/. Joseph Gordon-Levitt will play Edward Snowden in the film adaptation of lawyer Anatoly Kucherena’s book Time of the Octopus.
The information was confirmed by the creators of the film, which will be directed by three time Academy Award winner Oliver Stone.
Earlier Stone and producer Moritz Borman bought rights for the book of journalist Luke Harding called The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World's Most Wanted Man. It deals with the life of a former National Security Agency contractor until the moment when he started disclosing secret methods of American intelligence.
Moreover, Stone bought rights for film adaptation of Kucherena’s book. The story of the whistleblower trapped in a transit zone of a Russian airport pending the decision of Russian authorities to provide him asylum is the main idea of the plot. Stone used both books in the work on the script. The shooting of the film will be held in Munich, Reuters reported. The title and the release date have not been announced yet.
Snowden has been staying in Russia since June 2013. He is provided with temporary asylum.
Pentagon experts came to conclusion that he stole approximately 1.7 million secret documents concerning not only the activities of the secret services, but also operations of the US armed forces of all types - Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps. In the US, Snowden was charged with disclosing classified information in absentia, and he faces a lengthy prison sentence.
