US and German scientists awarded 2014 Nobel Prize in Chemistry
Eric Betzig, Stefan W. Hell and William E. Moerner got the prestigious Prize for improving resolution of microscopes
STOCKHOLM, October 8. /TASS/. The Nobel Prize for Chemistry has been awarded this year to two American and one German scientist for "the development of super-resolved fluorescence microscopy”, the awarding academy said on Wednesday.
American reseachers Eric Betzig and William Moerner and Germany's Stefan Hell overcame the resolution limits of optical microscopy and brought it down to the nanoscale, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said in its prize citation.
The Nobel Prize for Physics has been awarded this year to three Japanese professors for the invention of blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs) “which has enabled bright and energy-saving white light sources." And another three scientists from Norway and the US shared the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discoveries of cells that constitute a positioning system in the brain.
