New variety of roses selected in Russia to be presented in Moscow's Gorky Park

MOSCOW, June 30. /ITAR-TASS/. A new variety of roses selected in honor of the 22nd Olympic Winter Games held in Sochi in February of this year will be presented at the III International Flower and Garden Festival in Moscow’s Gorky Park on July 6-13.

“The main news-making event at the festival will be a presentation of a new variety of roses named Olympic after the Olympic Games in Sochi. The rose was selected by the French company Meilland. Renowned Russian athlete Yelena Isinbayeva will be its ‘godmother’,” the festival press service said.

In her address to the festival’s organizing committee, Isinbayeva said she was glad that sports and the Olympic movement had inspired French specialists to breed a new rose to commemorate the Sochi Olympics.

“Both sports and creative work seek to produce bring more beauty and harmony into our complex and turbulent world. The more harmony and beauty there is, there less there will be tears and grief. Let the Olympic rose bring everyone joy and good luck,” she said.

The festival will present the latest landscaping trends and will bring together specialists from Italy, Great Britain, Poland, France, and other countries. Their works will compete in an international contest and will be assessed by a jury headed by James Alexander-Sinclair, a BBC presenter and a judge of the Royal Horticultural Society.

“The purpose of the festival is to advance the landscaping industry as high art and culture. We want to say that garden art is an important part of our life and is available to everyone,” Festival President Karina Lazareva said.
