THE HAGUE, May 27. /ITAR-TASS/. Greenpeace activists have blocked an oil platform in the Netherlands, preventing it from being brought to the Arctic shelf for drilling. The Russian version of the organization’s official website reported this on Tuesday.

“Divers chained the substructure of the Saturn platform, preventing it from moving,” Greenpeace reported. “Other activists climbed the platform and unfurled a banner saying ‘Save the Arctic’.”

The Saturn platform is located in the port of Ijmuiden. On Tuesday, it was expected to be dragged to the port of Rotterdam, taken aboard a ship and brought to Gazprom’s Dolginskoye field in the Pechora Sea.

According to the activists, this 26-year-old platform has never been used in the northern and polar latitudes and does not comply with required exploitation and storm qualities. “In these conditions, incidents including with oil spills are simply unavoidable,” the international organization’s representatives claim.

30 activists from the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany are taking part in the campaign.
