RIGA, May 14. /ITAR-TASS/. Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia is likely to visit Latvia in the autumn 2014, the chairman of the Russian Orthodox Church Synodal Information Department, Vladimir Legoida has said.

In April Latvian President Andris Berzins sent a letter to the Russian patriarch to ask him to postpone the visit, scheduled for the middle of May, due to the situation in Ukraine.

“The letter was studied. With regard to the letter’s contents and the position by head of the Latvian Orthodox Church Metropolitan Alexander a decision was taken to postpone the visit,” Legoida said in an interview with Latvia’s Subbota daily on Wednesday.

“I can’t specify the date. I don’t rule out that it may take place this year: maybe, in the autumn,” he said.

Patriarch Kirill accepted the invitation to visit Latvia as part of his first official visit to the Baltic republic in December 2010. The visit was scheduled to be held on May 17-18, 2014.

In June 2013, Patriarch Kirill made a trip to Estonia. He met Estonian Prime Minister Andrus Ansip, parliament speaker Ene Ergma and Tallinn Mayor Edgar Savisaar.

The patriarch consecrated a new Orthodox church in the name of Icon of the Mother of God “Quick to Hearken”. Ten years ago Patriarch Alexy II, born in Tallinn, laid the foundation stone of the church.
