Novosibirsk residents will choose name for polar bear cub
The zoo will let the residents of Novosibirsk choose a name for the little bear by organizing a special contest
NOVOSIBIRSK, March 13. /ITAR-TASS/. A zoo in Novosibirsk will soon announce a contest among the city’s residents to choose a name for a white bear cub, which was born from bears Kai and Gerda, said deputy head of the zoo Olga Shilo.
“We can choose a name after the sex of the cub is determined. As for now, the mother does not leave the little bear alone. It is hard to say when we will be able to examine the cub, but I think that by summer we will figure it out,” Shilo noted. The deputy head added that the zoo will let the residents of Novosibirsk choose a name for the little bear by organizing a special contest.
The mother, Gerda, took the cub out of the shelter for the first time on March 6. Before that, zookeepers could only watch the newborn bear via a camera stationed inside the open-air cage.
The zoo’s press secretary Evgenia Pirozhkova said that zookeepers plan to install a web-camera in the open-air cage with polar bears and organize online live broadcast, so that everybody can see the little bear.
The parents, Kai and Gerda, are a relatively young couple. Both bears were transferred to Novosibirsk Zoo in 2008. Kai was brought from St. Petersburg Zoo, and Gerda came from Moscow Zoo.
