The tiger will take a recuperation course supervised by veterinarians

VLADIVOSTOK, February 06. /ITAR-TASS/. An adult Amur tiger that was found ill and weak in Russian Far East’s Amur region several days ago was brought to the Primorsky safari park on Thursday. The predator endured the delivery quite well, director of the safari park Dmitry Mezentsev told Itar-Tass. “Its condition has apparently improved. He is more active, eats well and behaves aggressively, as a wild beast should behave,” he said.

The tiger passed whole long way of more than 2,000 kilometers from Amur Region to Shkotovsky district in southern Primorsky Territory in a protected and heated trailer. The road took three days; specialists of the special inspection for tigers in the country’s Ministry of Natural Resources had to stop at night. They spent the last night with the tiger in the town of Lesozavodsk in northern Primorsky Territory.

An open-air cage with heated den is prepared for the tiger in the safari park. Veterinarians will also welcome the wild guest and the tiger will take a recuperation course under their supervision. The predator is expected to spend at least two months in the park. If the tiger recovers he will be released back in the wild. If his injury is heavy he may stay in the cage until the end of his life.

If hopes of zoologists are justified and the patient will be recovering a huge open-air cage with 220 meters in perimeter will be provided for a rehabilitation course. This open-air cage is an enclosed part of taiga, where the tiger will be feeling absolutely safe and can restore its living skills it had in the wild.

Inspectors have found the injured tiger on his traces late in January. The predator was moving, dragging his rear feet behind him. They decided to examine it and give aid to the animal. Tiger inspectors have made an injection to the tiger, an adult male aged 5-6 years, to make it immovable and brought it to the nearest settlement, where doctors have took tests from it and have made a tomographic scanning procedure on it. Tests showed that the animal did not have any bone fractures, spinal injuries or infectious diseases. Therefore, it was decided to bring it to the safari park in Primorsky Territory for further treatment and rehabilitation course.

The Primorsky safari park was opened in Shkotovsky district seven years ago. Tens of species of animals and birds live in enclosed taiga territories in the park. Most animals of the park are found in the taiga sick or injured.

The park participates in the program of the Euro-Asian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquaria for breeding Amur tiger. Two specimen of this species — brother and sister aged one year and 10 months live in the park now. Young tigers were brought to the Primorsky safari park from Amur regional zoo in November 2012. They were believed to be sisters for a long time. However, a mistake was found and some changes were made in the breeding program. This year the predators will be separated. Tiger named Amur will stay in the park and will wait for a female tiger. Female tiger Taiga will be taken to a new living place.
