MOSCOW, January 19. /TASS/. At a meeting with International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) President Mirjana Spoljaric, Russian Human Rights Commissioner Tatyana Moskalkova asked the ICRC to more actively visit Russian servicemen in Ukrainian captivity, especially wounded servicemen.

"Meeting with the president of the International Committee of the Red Cross Mirjana Spoljaric. Asked the ICRC to intensify work on visiting Russian servicemen held in Ukraine, especially the wounded ones," Moskalkova wrote on her Telegram channel on Thursday.

At their meeting, Moskalkova and Spoljaric discussed the importance of complying with international humanitarian law, especially with regard to prisoners of war, and making easier access to them. The Russian ombudsperson and the ICRC president agreed to work to help civilians: in evacuation, family reunion, search for the missing persons.

Moskalkova drew the organization's attention to the need to strengthen interaction. "The principles of humane treatment of prisoners of war are laid down in the Geneva Convention. However, it was adopted in 1949 and it did not envisage back then the mechanisms of cooperation between the ICRC and the ombudspersons. Only our good will and common aspirations can guarantee effective joint work," the commissioner said.

The president of the ICRC, in turn, stressed the importance of joint work on humanitarian issues and confirmed her intention to further develop cooperation, Moskalkova added.
