Two people killed in light aircraft crash in Germany, DPA reports
The aircraft crashed onto the roadway for an as-yet-unknown reason and caught fire
BERLIN, November 6. /TASS/. Two people were killed when a light aircraft crashed onto the A2 motorway northeast of the city of Magdeburg in the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, the DPA news agency reported, citing a local police spokesperson.
According to the spokesperson, the incident occurred at around 2:48 p.m. local time (4:48 p.m. Moscow time) on a stretch of the motorway between the town of Burg and the Kraenberge rest area. The aircraft crashed onto the roadway for an as-yet-unknown reason and caught fire. Preliminary reports indicate that no vehicles traveling along the highway were damaged.
Rescue workers who arrived at the scene recovered the bodies of two people from the wreckage. Emergency services and police officers are still working at the site. Footage from the crash site shows that the red-and-white aircraft was almost completely destroyed by fire, with its tail section blocking the road and the remaining debris scattered down the slope beside the highway.
According to the Flightradar website, the aircraft was an Aerostyle Breezer ultralight two-seater. Available information indicates that it was registered with an aero club in Kropp, in the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein, and took off at 12:33 p.m. (2:33 p.m. Moscow time) from the club’s airfield in Schleswig.
Traffic on the motorway toward Hanover has been completely suspended, with no indication yet of when it will resume. The A2 is one of Germany’s key east-west transport routes, connecting the Berlin metropolitan area with the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
