YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, August 24. /TASS/. The lower part of the city of Tomari in the Sakhalin Region has been flooded after a powerful cyclone struck the region, Sakhalin Region Governor Valery Limarenko said.

"The lower part of the city, roads, dachas, and residential buildings were flooded. I have sent Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Rimsha to the area to coordinate the work to eliminate the consequences there. Currently, work is underway to divert the water flow into the sea. All services are operating at an enhanced level, and all necessary measures are being taken. Residents are being provided with all possible assistance," the head of the region said.

According to Limarenko, the water level in the Tomarinka River rose above five meters. Water levels in other rivers also rose after heavy rains fell across 13 districts of the region, flooding 17 houses. Rescuers are urging people not to leave the settlements.

Rescuers from the Emergencies Ministry were dispatched to the Tomari district to help deal with the consequences of the cyclone, according to the ministry.

Six rescuers from the Polyakov search and rescue team, using three pieces of equipment, including a watercraft, were sent to assist the people. A woman was evacuated from the roof of a dacha house. A family was also evacuated from a flooded part of the city in the area.

"The evacuation took place because it was necessary to help move equipment, machinery, and furniture from the upper part of the city," said Mayor Olga Manzhara.

A temporary accommodation point was established in the area. The Tomari District Prosecutor’s Office is overseeing the cleanup efforts.

So far, it is difficult for the local authorities to assess the damage. The administration will begin this work after the water recedes.
