More than 20 people injured in earthquake near Tokyo
No abnormal situations were recorded at the nuclear facilities, the fire service reported
TOKYO, August 23. /TASS/. More than 20 people have been injured in a magnitude of 5.9 earthquake that hit the Greater Tokyo area on Sunday night, according to the fire service, which acts as the emergency medical service.
In one of the districts of Tokyo, water pipes burst, and water flooded the roadway. In some buildings, elevators automatically shut down. No abnormal situations were recorded at the nuclear facilities; railway traffic was suspended, but now is running as scheduled.
According to the country’s meteorological authority, the epicenter of the earthquake was located in Ibaraki Prefecture, which is adjacent to Tokyo; the focus was at a depth of 68 km. The Greater Tokyo Area includes the Japanese capital and three adjacent prefectures, with a total population of about 17 million people.
