TOKYO, June 25. /TASS/. At least five people were hurt in a powerful earthquake in Japan, Kyodo reported.

According to the news agency, the casualties were reported from the Iwate and Aomori prefectures. These people received minor injuries.

A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck northeastern Japan early on Thursday. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the epicenter was located in the Pacific Ocean, east of the Iwate Prefecture. The quake’s magnitude was initially assessed at 6.9 but later the figure was corrected to 7.2. A tsunami warning was issued after the earth tremor but was cancelled several minutes later. Local residents were warned about potential aftershocks in the coming week.

No accidents have been reported from the local nuclear facilities, including the Fukushima-1 NPP.

The quake disrupted railway service, with high-speed trains traffic being suspended in northeastern regions.
