Attack on Russia’s consulate in Marseille involves three explosive devices — source
The consulate official clarified that the diplomatic mission’s building had not incurred any damage
PARIS, February 24. /TASS/. Three unidentified explosive devices were launched at Russia’s consulate in the French city of Marseille on Monday morning, a source at the diplomatic facility told TASS.
"Three devices were launched; two of them exploded, and bomb experts are now working on the third one. There were no casualties or damage," he said.
The consulate official clarified that the diplomatic mission’s building had not incurred any damage. Bomb experts are now working on the consulate's premises; firefighters and police officers have also arrived at the scene. The area around the consulate general has been sealed off, and some of its personnel are waiting outside for the bomb experts to examine the unexploded device.
Earlier, France’s BFMTV reported that explosions had occurred near the Russian consulate in Marseille. Around 30 firefighters arrived at the scene. A reporter for the Valeurs Actuelles magazine, in turn, specified that unidentified individuals must have thrown Molotov cocktails into the consulate’s garden. In addition, a stolen car was found near the scene of the incident, which was being inspected by police.
Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) warned on February 19 that the Kiev authorities were considering the possibility of carrying out terrorist attacks on Russian diplomatic facilities in Europe, particularly in Germany, the Baltic, and Scandinavian countries. According to the SVR, the Ukrainians could also target Slovakia or Hungary because such a choice offers an "additional benefit," allowing them to discredit European Union members with a special position on the Ukraine conflict.
