Taiwanese earthquake death toll rises to 10, some 1,100 injured

According to updated statistics, 705 people are still waiting for assistance in hard-to-reach areas, including 500 trapped in mountainous terrain of the Taroko National Park

HONG KONG, April 5. /TASS/. The number of people, killed by a major earthquake in Taiwan, has risen to 10, while the number of injured currently stands at 1,106, the Taiwanese crisis response center said in its bulletin.

According to updated statistics, 705 people are still waiting for assistance in hard-to-reach areas, including 500 trapped in mountainous terrain of the Taroko National Park. 18 people remain unaccounted for.

On Wednesday morning, Taiwan was rocked by an earthquake, its strongest in 25 years. The 7.2-magnitude tremors hit Hualien County at 7:58 a.m. local time and were felt across Taiwan. According to seismologists, the epicenter was located at a depth of 15.5 kilometers some 25 kilometers southeast of the city of Hualien on the island’s east coast. The tremors were distinctly felt in China’s eastern provinces of Fujian and Jiangxi.
