Baltimore bridge collapse not caused by intentional act — Biden
According to US president, the crew notified the Maryland Department of Transportation that the ship lost control
WASHINGTON, March 26. /TASS/. The collapse of the bridge in Baltimore was caused by an incidental collision of a ship with a bridge pillar, it was not an intentional act, US President Joe Biden said.
"We have no other indication, no other reason to believe there's any intentional act here," Biden said. "Everything so far indicates that this was a terrible accident.
According to Biden, the crew notified the Maryland Department of Transportation that the ship lost control.
"As a result local authorities were able to close the bridge to traffic before the bridge was struck, which undoubtedly saved lives," the US president said.
He noted that one person was hospitalized after the incident in a critical condition. Another injured person required no hospitalization. The search for six other people continues.
The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed on March 25 after it was hit by the Dali freighter travelling under the flag of Singapore. Video footage of the collapse disseminated on social media. After the impact, the bridge spans started to crumble, and the several cars that were on them fell into the water. Maryland Governor Wes Moore declared a state of emergency over the incident.
