NEW YORK, January 2. /TASS/. The US Geological Survey registered an earthquake off Roosevelt Island in downtown New York City that coincided with calls from locals reporting the sounds of explosions and shaking.
According to US seismologists, a 1.7 magnitude earthquake was registered in Queens at 5:54 a.m. local time (10:54 a.m. GMT) on Tuesday, with the epicenter lying at a depth of 5 km. The city’s fire department told TASS that calls were received from local residents for reports of "a series of explosions and a building shaking."
Con Edison, a gas and electricity supplier for New York City, said a household had complained of power outage.
Russian Consul General in New York Alexander Zakharov told TASS that, "so far, the Consulate General has received no calls to its hotline [over the incident]," while Russian diplomats "sent inquiries to municipal emergency services as to whether any Russian citizens may have been injured.".
