Beijing subway train collision leaves over 500 injured, transport authority reports
A preliminary investigation found that subway tracks were covered in ice as a result of snowfall, compelling the driver of the first train to apply the emergency brake
BEIJING, December 15. /TASS/. Over 500 people suffered injuries after two trains collided in the Beijing subway, the Chinese capital’s transport authority said.
A total of 515 people were sent to medical facilities for examination, and 102 were diagnosed with fractures. The accident did not cause any fatalities.
The transport authority said earlier on the Weibo social media platform that the accident had occurred underground between the Xi’erqi and Life Science Park stations on the northwestern Changping subway line at 6:58 p.m. local time (10:58 a.m. GMT).
A preliminary investigation found that subway tracks were covered in ice as a result of snowfall, compelling the driver of the first train to apply the emergency brake. His train was followed by a second train, whose driver failed to slow down in time, causing the collision. As of Friday, 67 of the injured remain hospitalized.
