Moderate earthquake hits off Kamchatka

MOSCOW, April 11. /TASS/. A magnitude 5.8 earthquake has hit Kamchatka’s coast in the Russian Far East, the Kamchatka office of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Geophysical Service said on Tuesday.

According to the service, the epicenter of the earthquake was located 57 kilometers from the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

According to the territorial department of the Russian emergencies ministry, the quake was registered at 11:39 p.m. local time (2:39 p.m. Moscow time) at a depth of 89 kilometers. Magnitude 4-5 tremors were felt in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

According to the Kamchatka office of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Geophysical Service, this was an aftershock of the April 3 quake. "There are no grounds for worries, as this is a natural process. Aftershock is the quake zone can occurred within two to three weeks," it said.
