Gun battle on Tajik-Kyrgyz border leaves one dead — media

DUSHANBE, June 14. /TASS/. A gun battle broke out on Tuesday morning on the Tajik-Kyrgyz border, killing one Tajik border guard, the Asia Plus news agency reported.

According to the information, on Tuesday morning, at about 06:00 local time (04:00 Moscow time), a shootout between Tajik and Kyrgyz border guards erupted near Kekh, 10 kilometers from the center of Jamoat (Vorukh District of Isfara, Sughd Region). The agency quotes a report from the residents of the area who claimed that "there is a casualty, an enlisted soldier". This information has not yet been officially confirmed.

The agency's report claims that Kyrgyz side opened fire, particularly using mortars. It is also reported that the border guards of the Batken Region of Kyrgyzstan and the Sughd Region of Tajikistan have already held telephone conversations and the heads of the border guard units have left for the scene of the incident.

The Tajik-Kyrgyz border spans more than 980 kilometers, and after the collapse of the Soviet Union there were dozens of disputed sections along the perimeter. Till now, more than 663 km have been identified and agreed upon in the delimitation and demarcation process. In some areas, disputes and conflicts between local residents of the border areas occasionally pops up.
