Sakhalin court sentences migrant to 8.5 years in prison for sponsoring terrorists

YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, March 17. /TASS/. A court in Sakhalin has sentenced a migrant from a Central Asian republic to 8.5 years behind bars for sponsoring an international terrorist organization, the press service of the Russian Federal Security Service’s (FSB) Sakhalin region department said on Thursday.

"Based on the actual circumstances of the crime and the degree of its public danger, the court sentenced the man to 8.5 years behind bars: two years in prison and 6.5 years in a maximum security penal colony. The sentence has come into effect," the press service said.

The convict admitted his guilt.

According to investigators, while staying in Russia’s Novosibirsk and Sakhalin regions, the 22-year-old citizen of a Central Asian republic, a radical Islamist, transferred money to the accounts of an international terrorist organization, which is outlawed in Russia, to buy weapons, munitions and equipment. A criminal case was opened on charges of abetting terrorist activities (part 1.1, article 205.1 of the Russian Criminal Code).
