Russian tourists attacked in Istanbul are in hospital, suspect detained

The motives behind the attack are yet unclear, but Turkish media outlets say that the assailant may be mentally unstable

ANKARA, January 25./TASS/. Two Russian tourists injured in a knife attack in Istanbul on Sunday are under the supervision of medics, while the condition of a third one is not alarming, the Russian Consulate General in Istanbul said on Monday.

"The Consulate General applied to the law enforcement agencies with a request to supply detailed information about the incident. According to available information, the suspect in the attack has been detained," the diplomatic mission said on its official Facebook page.

"Two injured Russian nationals are under the supervision of medics with injuries of different degree, the condition of a third national gives no causes for concern. He may be discharged from hospital shortly. The Consulate-General continues to closely monitor the situation and the condition of those hospitalized," it pointed out.

According to preliminary data, the suspect in the knife attack in Istanbul’s Besiktas neighborhood is a garbage collector. The consulate specified that a Turkish national had inflicted numerous stab wounds supposedly as a result of a spat with Russian tourists.
