Woman suffers several stab wounds in attack on Russian tourists in Istanbul

A security officer from Besiktas neighborhood told TASS that the incident occurred at 20:20 Moscow time on Sunday

ANKARA, January 25. /TASS/. A female tourist suffered at least seven stab wounds in a knife attack on Russian tourists in Istanbul late on Sunday, an eyewitness has told TASS on condition of anonymity.

"I saw that about 50 meters from my house he [the attacker - TASS] was standing and asking passersby for money. Then, for some reason, he followed Russian tourists," the source said.

At first he stabbed one of the tourists, who managed to run away. He also stabbed another one in the hand. A female failed to escape, and he stabbed her seven times, vanishing after that," the eyewitness said. The source said that he and other people walking by had tried to help the injured tourists as well as called the police and the ambulance.

Earlier, a security officer from Besiktas neighborhood told TASS that the incident occurred at 20:20 Moscow time on Sunday. The suspect is a garbage collector who has already been detained for questioning. The motives behind his attack are yet unclear, but Turkish media outlets say that he may be mentally unstable.

The Russian Consulate General in Istanbul said that Russian diplomats were looking into the attack.
