Three power units of NPP in Russia’s Tver disconnected due to short circuit
The background radiation is normal, according to the plant's press service
MOSCOW, July 18. /TASS/. Tansformer short circuit at the Kalinin nuclear power plant (NPP) on Thursday morning resulted in a complete shutdown of two and a partial shutdown of another power unit in the Tver region. According to Rosenergoatom, another power unit remains in operation.
According to the representative of System Operator of the Unified Energy System, three power units were shut off at 5:02 Moscow time. The total reduction in the working capacity of the station as a result reached 3 GW.
The Public Information Center of the Kalinin NPP stated that the background radiation is normal, there is no damage to the equipment of the station itself. "This is not related to the operation of the main equipment of the plant," a representative of Rosenergoatom press service told TASS.
Three units of the Kalinin nuclear power plant (NPP) can be connected to the grid on July 19 after finding out the causes of the incident at the plant. "At the moment we need to find out the reasons, without it we won’t get permission to be connected to the grid. As we find out the reasons, we’ll see which power units will be included and in what sequence. Powering up the units is tentatively expected before July 19," the Center said.
A representative of Rosenergoatom press service told TASS that the shutdown of several power units at the plant resulted from a short circuit at one of the transformer switches. Thus, the first and second power units were completely shut down, the fourth - partly, but the third unit remains in operation. "The first and second power units have been completely unloaded, the third one in operation, the fourth power unit reactor does not generate electrical energy, but is ready for load," the company’s representative said.
System Operator of the Unified Energy System representative told TASS, there were no consequences for the electricity consumers.
Kalinin NPP
Kalinin NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern. The plant is located in the north of the Tver region. The Kalinin NPP consists of four power units with water-cooled power reactors (VVER-1000) with an installed capacity of 1,000 MW each. The power unit No. 1 was launched in 1984, the power unit No. 2 in 1986, power units No. 3 and No. 4 - in 2004 and 2011, respectively.
In 2016, a short circuit occurred at the electrical equipment of power unit No. 3 of the Kalinin NPP during repair works. Two people were injured in the incident.
