ANKARA, December 13. /TASS/. The number of those injured when a high-speed train crashed in Ankara on Thursday has grown to 84, and 34 of them are receiving medical assistance at hospitals, Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said on Thursday.

"Nine people were killed and 84 were injured in the train crash. Doctors at hospitals are providing assistance to 34 of them, and two are in serious condition," the minister was quoted by NTV channel as saying.

The crash occurred near the Marsandiz station in western Ankara some seven kilometers from the city center. The train, en route from Ankara to Konya, crashed into a maintenance locomotive.

After the crash several carriages derailed or overturned, and another two cars collided with a pedestrian overpass, which later collapsed. Ankara’s prosecutors have launched an investigation into the accident.

Police have detained three employees of Turkey’s State Railways in connection with the crash investigation, the Anadolu news agency reported. The suspects’ negligence could have triggered the tragedy, it said.
