Russia’s most popular festive dish gets more expensive this year

MOSCOW, December 14. /TASS/. Olivier salad, most popular dish for a New Year Eve dinner in Russia, will become 1.8% more expensive this year in comparison with 2015, the Federal Statistics Service (Rosstat) reported.
Last year the cost of Olivier salad for a family of four was about 305 rubles ($4.9) on average and this year it will cost 310 rubles ($5), Rosstat said.
Oliver salad is usually made with diced boiled potatoes, carrots, green peas, eggs, onions, diced boiled chicken(or sometimes ham or bologna sausage), tart apples, with salt, pepper, and mustard added to enhance flavor, dressed with mayonnaise.
The cost of preparation of "dressed herring," which is another traditional dish for a New Year Eve dinner, increased by 3.7%, to 155 rubles ($2.5).
Among the ingredients of these two salads mayonnaise rose in price most of all - by 8.7%.
Over the year the cost of a set of food products for the New Year Eve’s table of a family of four increased by 3.6% to 5,580 rubles ($91). That is an average figure for Russia. The minimum food set cost 1,950 rubles ($32), which is a 3.9% growth.
For Muscovites Christmas table will cost 6,860 rubles ($112) on average (growth by 2.8%), for residents of St. Petersburg 5,900 rubles ($96), which is a 5.5% hike.
This year, New Year’s Eve table will be most expensive for residents of the Chukotka Autonomous District (8,400 rubles - $137) and least expensive for the residents of the Republic of Kalmykia (4,100 rubles - $67).
Earlier Rosstat reported that in January-November 2016, the growth of food prices was 4%.
