Ukraine rips up agreements on information and broadcasting with Russia
KIEV, November 30. /TASS/. Ukraine’s cabinet has torn up the Russian-Ukrainian agreement on cooperation in the field of TV and radio broadcasting as well as the agreement on information-related cooperation, Prime Minister Vladimir Groysman announced.
The bilateral agreement on information-related cooperation went into effect in 1998. According to the deal, it was aimed at "a wide and free exchange of information, involving information services (agencies), audiovisual services, print media and other kinds of media."
The Ukrainian-Russian agreement on cooperation in the field of TV and radio broadcasting, effective since 2000, stipulated "the creation of favorable legal, administrative and economic conditions for broadcasting programs by Russian TV and radio companies on Ukraine’s territory and Ukraine’s TV and radio companies on Russia’s territory." According to the agreement, the two countries agreed on "the use the Russian language in the Russian TV programs and the Ukrainian language while broadcasting programs by the Ukrainian TV and radio companies."
The agreements also said they were "based upon the cultural proximity and centuries-long friendly relations between the two peoples, and were aimed at enhancing mutual understanding."
