Ukraine files lawsuit with Kiev court to recover $3 bln from Gazprom
The Ukrainian Anti-Monopoly Committee fined Gazprom for abusing its monopoly position on the market of natural gas
KIEV, October 5. /TASS/. Ukraine’s Anti-Monopoly Committee has filed a lawsuit with the Kiev Commercial Court to recover 86 billion hryvnia (about $3.3 billion) from Russian energy giant Gazprom, the committee’s press office reported on Wednesday.
"Today, on October 5, 2016, the Ukrainian Anti-Monopoly Committee has filed a lawsuit with the Kiev Commercial Court on the enforced recovery of a fine, a late payment penalty and an obligation from Gazprom to fulfil the committee’s decision on terminating the violation," the statement said.
According to the press office, the Ukrainian Anti-Monopoly Committee fined Gazprom 86 billion hryvnia (about $3.3 billion) for abusing its monopoly position on the market of natural gas transit via the Ukrainian gas transportation system, giving the gas giant a deadline until May 4, 2016 to fulfil this decision.
The decision was made pursuant to the Ukrainian government’s instruction, and also amid the European Commission’s accusations against Gazprom due to its dominating position on the market of Central and Eastern Europe, which violated the EU anti-trust legislation.
Gazprom challenged this decision on April 12 by sending a lawsuit to the Kiev Commercial Court. However, the court rejected it.
