SOCHI, May 20. /TASS/. Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom is ready to take part in nuclear projects in Malaysia, Energy Minister Alexander Novak told a press conference at Russia-ASEAN summit.
"Malaysia is studying capabilities of suppliers for the construction of nuclear power plants. Rosatom is ready to participate in the program, in particular to invite Malaysian students to study in Russia," he said.
An official with Rosatom confirmed their interest in the development of nuclear energy sector in Malaysia.
The Russian state corporation a few years ago declared their readiness to take part in the tender for the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Malaysia, if it is announced.
Rosatom proceeds from the fact that in 2009 the Malaysian government decided to develop nuclear power as one of the components of types of production in the country's energy balance starting from 2020.
In late 2015, the Malaysian government stated that nuclear power plants in the country will not start operating earlier than 2030, if the decision to build them is recognized as an appropriate one. Currently, Malaysia operates the only research reactor TRIGA which was launched in 1982.
