OPEC should move to majority-vote decision-making — Nigeria’s oil minister
"The next futuristic OPEC will be much more regulated, much more disciplined, it should be based on majority vote as opposed to unanimity," Emmanuel Ibe Kachiwku said
DOHA, April 17. /TASS/. OPEC should move to the principle of majority vote when making decisions, Nigeria’s oil minister Emmanuel Ibe Kachiwku told TASS after talks with other producer-countries in Doha.
"The next futuristic OPEC will be much more regulated, much more disciplined, it should be based on majority vote as opposed to unanimity," he said.
He added that the current unanimous approach "in some sense is good because nobody feels left out" during decision-making. "Everything we’ve done so far is based on unanimous decisions and that has sometimes been a problem, so just counting the majority was still not enough to find decisions," Kachiwku said.
Oil-producing countries from OPEC as well as non-OPEC members, met in Doha (Qatar) to discuss the stabilization of oil prices, although the countries failed to conclude the agreement.
Earlier, Azerbaijan's Energy Minister Natiq Aliyev said in an exclusive interview with TASS that draft agreement of the oil producer countries suggested "freezing" the production at January level through to October, 2016.
