The Volkswagen Kaluga plant halted output three times in 2014

KALUGA, January 12. /TASS/. The German auto maker Volkswagen and PCMA Rus, an assembly plant owned by Peugeot Citroen and Mitsubishi Motors, restarted car production in Kaluga in central Russia on Monday.

Volkswagen resumed auto output after week-long idleness and the New Year holidays. The German auto maker suspended car production in Kaluga from December 22. Volkswagen spokeswoman Natalia Kostyukevich said at the time the car production was halted as the auto plant had produced “the number of cars planned for production in the current economic situation.”

The Volkswagen Kaluga plant halted output three times in 2014. In 2013, Volkswagen invested €97 million in the Kaluga plant expansion. Volkswagen’s Kaluga plant rolls out Polo Sedan, Tiguan and Skoda Rapid car models. Volkswagen Group Rus has been producing cars in Kaluga since November 2007.

PCMA Rus halted output in Kaluga from December 17.

“Traditionally, the plant makes a planned technical halt for the New Year holidays and the decision on the earlier stoppage in December 2014 was due to sufficient product stocks and the expected effect of the current economic situation on the auto market dynamics in the first months of 2015,” the plant’s press office said.

The PCMA Rus plant in Kaluga assembles Peugeot Citroen and Mitsubishi cars. The plant has a designed capacity of 125,000 cars annually. The factory will start assembling a renewed version of Mitsubishi Outlanders in the first half of 2015.
