MOSCOW, November 5. /TASS/. Russian social network VKontakte has asked the Office of the US Trade Representative not to include it into a Special 301 Watch List, to which the office annually adds perpetrators of authors’ and neighboring rights, business daily Vedomosti reported Monday, quoting VKontakte’s general counsel Mariya Klimenko.

Klimenko published her comment on the Web site of the US office and attached a letter of the Russian company’s Director Dmitry Sergeyev.

The US office is currently drawing a new Special 301 Watch List for 2014 and is collecting opinions of interested parties.

The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) submitted reports to the US office on piracy problems in the world, and VKontakte is the first to be mentioned.

VKontakte’s presence on the list may hurt its business as many international companies have restrictions on cooperation with listed firms, while VKontakte earns about 50% of its revenue from advertising.

Sergeyev said in the letter that VKontakte always signs a user agreement restricting the upload of unlicensed content into the social network, and the company cannot be responsible for actions of users and third parties developing applications to access VKontakte’s content.

Owners of the rights can always submit a claim to VKontakte, which has already processed some 450,000 complaints against piracy content via a special form on the Web site. Of the total, 60,000 complaints were rejected, while the remaining were satisfied and the content in question was deleted.

VKontakte also tries to erase all applications enabling to download content from the social network.
