The cableway construction is expected to begin just three months after the launch of another major Russian-Chinese infrastructure project, a bridge over the Amur River

HEIHE (China), September 24. /ITAR-TASS/. The construction of a unique cableway linking Russia’s Blagoveshchensk with China’s Heihe is due to start in September 2015, the Chinese city mayor, Zhang Enliang said on Wednesday.

“Next year, we will begin the construction of a cableway through the Heilongjiang river [Chinese name for Amur]. If we build it, this will be the world’s only cableway linking two countries,” said the mayor of the prefecture-level city of northern China’s Heilongjiang province.

“This will probably serve as a good example for developing the border regions of China and Russia,” Enliang said.

The cableway construction is expected to begin just three months after the launch of another major Russian-Chinese infrastructure project, a bridge over the Amur River.

“Many years have passed since the agreement on the construction was reached. Now the government of the Amur Region and the people’s government of Heihe have defined the timeframe for building the bridge,” the Chinese official said.

The cableway construction on the Chinese territory will start on the Big Heihe Island, some 300 meters from the checkpoint. The route will be around 1 kilometer long, with the ride lasting up to 3 minutes.

The all-weather cableway will be able to transport up to 2,000 passengers per hour. Each of 12 types of cable cars can carry 40 people.

The construction of the unique cableway is part of a major project to create the Amur tourist recreation cluster with the facilities to be located close to the Russian-Chinese border.
