Germany sees no grounds for concern about gas supplies amid Ukraine events

Gazprom halted gas supplies to Ukraine in June over its unpaid debt and filed a $4.5 billion suit to the Stockholm arbitration court

BERLIN, September 15. /ITAR-TASS/. The German government sees no grounds for concern about gas supplies from Russia to the European Union via Ukraine against the background of the situation in that country, a spokesperson for the German Ministry for Economics and Energy said in Berlin on Monday.

“Russia supplies gas to the West in routine amounts,” she said.

Last week, some western energy companies, including Polish PGNIG, Austrian OMV, and Germany’s biggest energy concern E.ON, reported a slight drop in supplies of Russian gas,

A source from the German concern told ITAR-TASS that supplies had dropped by several percent. “This is not a rare occurrence, it is temporary as practice shows,” he said.

Russian energy giant Gazprom on June 16 switched Ukraine’s oil and gas company Naftogaz to prepayment for gas supplies because Kiev failed to pay part of its gas debt by the deadline of 10:00 Moscow Time on June 16.

Gazprom halted gas supplies to Ukraine in June over its unpaid debt and filed a $4.5 billion suit to the Stockholm arbitration court. Later, Kiev reciprocated by sending a suit to the court against Gazprom for making Ukraine overpay $6 billion for gas since 2010, setting too high prices in its contract. Transit volumes were reportedly passing via Ukraine to Europe in line with the schedule.
