Russians may use international payment cards along with national card

SELIGER, August 25. /ITAR-TASS/. Russians will be able to use not only yet-to-be-created national payment cards, but international payment cards as well, Central Bank Chairwoman Elvira Nabiullina said at a forum on Monday.
“Nobody is going to forbid something by force, to make somebody to abandon cards, which are being used now,” Nabiullina said, adding that Russians could continue using cards of international payment systems when the domestic one is established.
In May, President Vladimir Putin signed a law to establish a national payment system after Visa and MasterCard stopped servicing cards of some Russian banks as part of US and EU sanctions against the country.
Nabiullina said that it is just “important that payment transactions to be processed on the Russian territory,” as this is the focus of the law.
