About four million tourists are expected this summer in Sochi

SOCHI, June 17. /ITAR-TASS/. Infrastructures created in Russia's city of Sochi has turned the Black Sea resort host of this year’s Winter Olympic Games into a world-class resort, the acting head of Russia’s Federal Agency for Tourism (Rostourism), Oleg Safonov, said after a conference of foreign tourism ministers in Sochi.

“There is a common task now to get holiday opportunities here across to Russian and foreign tourists, dispelling existing myths about the city,” Safonov said.

“Tourists are provided today with unique opportunities for accommodation in Sochi hotels,” he said, adding that regular hotel rooms started from 1,000 roubles (about $28) a night.

“It is very important therefore to inform Russians about good value for money and about new hotels, parks, airports and railway stations,” he said. “This information must be spread as widely as possible in order to fill not only well-known accommodation facilities, but also new hotels built for the Olympics.”

Conference organisers had arranged excursions for delegates from 26 countries, showing infrastructures built in the mountain cluster in Sochi and telling them about holiday opportunities there, Safonov said.

“Today, foreign guests will visit facilities situated in the sea cluster,” he said. “It is important that delegations from dozens of countries have arrived here. This indicates that even though politicians keep talking about sanctions, there is no isolation of Russia.”

“The task that faces all parties concerned is to create marketing opportunities so that as many tourists as possible, both Russian and foreign ones, would like to visit the resort city,” Safonov said, noting growing interest in medical tourism.

“We should create a sort of medical base to develop medical tourism. This can give an extra impetus to visits,” he said. “We should set up clinics in Sochi and promote services they offer.”

“This is a promising direction, as there are unique natural opportunities here,” he said. “And I am sure that tourists will come here to undergo medical examination and receive treatment.”

About four million tourists are expected this summer in Sochi. The city administration says the resort will be able to receive about seven million guests every year in the future.
