MOSCOW, June 11. /ITAR-TASS/. CEO of the South African Nuclear Regulator company Dr. Bismark Tyobeka has highly assessed Rosatom’s chances to win a contract for the construction of a nuclear power plant in South Africa.

Talking to journalists in the lobbies of the ATOMEXPO-2014 forum, Tyobeka reminded of a manifesto adopted by the ruling party before the recent election. Presenting the manifesto, President Jacob Zuma declared that South Africa was planning to build new nuclear reactors with an overall capacity of 9.6 GW. After the election these plans have not been changed, Dr. Tyabeka said.

He cited the results of earlier talks, held by Rosatom Chief Sergei Kiriyenko with South African energy minister Benedict Martins, at which Russia's participation in the development of nuclear power engineering in South Africa was discussed.

In a short while the South African president is expected to announce a decision as to what country will build a nuclear power plant in South Africa, Dr. Tyabeka said.

South African experts have visited China, which is one of Russia's main rivals, France and South Korea. All these countries also have a chance to become a contractor, but the main thing is whether they have sufficient experience of building nuclear power plants abroad. In that sense Russia has the best experience, and its chances are very high, Dr. Tyobeka said.
