Poland expects discount for Gazprom supplies this year
The company was eager to use this opportunity seeing prices being reduced for Lithuania and Italy
WARSAW, June 03, 18:15 /ITAR-TASS/. Polish energy concern Polskie Gornictwo Naftowe i Gazownictwo (PGNIG) hopes for a gas price reduction from the Russian gas holding Gazprom at the year-end, the Polish company’s head Mariusz Zawisza said on Tuesday.
The talks about price revision can start in November, according to the contract. The company was eager to use this opportunity seeing prices being reduced for Lithuania and Italy, Zawisza said.
Poland, he added, was the third largest gas buyer from Gazprom after Germany and Italy. “We always meet our liabilities in time and hope the price will be cut,” the revisions to take effect from 2015, Zawisza said.
When the long-term Yamal peninsula contract with Gazprom expires in 2022, PGNIG could reduce gas import from the east as much as possible. In particular, the company is going to start buying liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the US in two or three years.
The terms depended on construction of the US export pipelines and gas import permission of the national regulator, Zawisza said, admitting those contracts would not be as beneficial as the existing Yamal peninsula and Qatar projects.
Under the 20-year contract with Qatargas, Poland will be buying 1.3 billion cubic metres of Qatari LNG a year under the take-or-pay condition from January 2015. The LNG terminal in the city of Świnoujście to accept LNG is not yet completed and is reported to be not commissioned until May or June 2015.
Gazprom declined to comment on the situation on the grounds of not commenting on the contents of commercial contracts.
