Ukraine not notified about gas discount cancellation — energy minister
The agreed price for Russian gas transit through Ukraine was effective, and Kiev did not consider revision, says Ukrainian parliament-appointed Minister of Energy and Coal Industry
KIEV, March 25. /ITAR-TASS/. Ukraine has not been officially notified that discounts for Russian gas stipulated in the 2010 Kharkiv Accords have been cancelled, Ukrainian parliament-appointed Minister of Energy and Coal Industry Yury Prodan told a news conference on Tuesday.
“We now have contract relations with Gazprom and Naftogaz of Ukraine which stipulate a discount,” said Prodan.
The agreed price for Russian gas transit through Ukraine was effective, he added, Kiev did not consider revision. However, “there is a risk connected to a possible decline in gas supplies to Ukraine and a risk of a considerable increase in price for gas supplied to Ukraine (from Russia)”.
In this connection Prodan did not rule out Ukraine would assert its gas interests in court.
Commenting on the Russian State Duma deputies’ initiative to set up a trilateral consortium to manage the gas transportation system of Ukraine, Prodan said it was “a good idea” but it remained unclear whether “Russia was sincerely interested.” Besides, Ukraine had received no official proposals yet.
According to Prodan, Ukrainian underground gas storages now contain about 7 billion cubic metres of gas.
