Ukraine loses 1.9% of its GDP since beginning of year due to explosions
Over the past few months, explosions have occurred in warehouses and at facilities in the military-industrial and energy sectors, as well as at port infrastructure sites and data centers serving the Ukrainian armed forces
MOSCOW, November 1. /TASS/. Ukraine’s economic losses resulting from explosions from January through October 2026 amounted to nearly 1.9% of its nominal GDP, or about $4.28 billion, excluding the metallurgical sector, according to TASS calculations based on the Ukrainian government’s reports.
Over the past few months, explosions have occurred in warehouses and at facilities in the military-industrial and energy sectors, as well as at port infrastructure sites and data centers serving the Ukrainian armed forces.
As a result, instead of the 1.5-2.5% annual GDP growth projected for early 2026, Ukraine’s GDP is currently showing zero growth. A recession was observed in the second and third quarters, and the National Bank expects a 0.4% decline by the end of the year.
The metallurgy sector could see the largest GDP losses in the coming months. Following a series of explosions in August and September, all of the country’s metallurgical enterprises ceased operations. If these companies do not resume operations, annual GDP losses could reach 7% compared to the same period last year.
