Sudanese leader says Russia could establish free economic zone on Red Sea
Chairman of the Sovereignty Council of Sudan Abdel Fattah al-Burhan proposed that Russia participate in the development of Sudan’s railway infrastructure
MOSCOW, October 30. /TASS/. Khartoum has proposed that Moscow establish a free economic zone on the Red Sea coast, which could be used for the storage and subsequent supply of Russian goods, primarily wheat and fuel, to African countries, the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council of Sudan Abdel Fattah al-Burhan said at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"Sudan is a gateway to Africa, and we could establish a free economic zone on the Red Sea that Russia could use to set up storage facilities for fuel and wheat," he said.
Such infrastructure could be used to facilitate the supply of Russian goods not only to the Sudanese market but also to other countries on the continent, the leader of Sudan said, adding that there is a high demand for wheat and fuel both in Sudan itself and in other African countries.
Al-Burhan also proposed that Russia participate in the development of Sudan’s railway infrastructure. The country already has a railway network, which is slated for expansion, he said. Logistics chains for transporting goods could be established along these railway routes, with the participation of Russian companies, he noted.
Sudan possesses the necessary territory and capabilities for implementing joint projects, but it requires investment in infrastructure, the country’s leader said, adding that Khartoum is ready "to cooperate with Russia on this matter.".
