MOSCOW, August 24. /TASS/. Rosatom’s experience in building the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in India provides a foundation for deeper cooperation in nuclear energy, potentially including new facilities and the localization of equipment and nuclear fuel production, Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov said.

"The successful experience of cooperation on the Kudankulam NPP project provides a foundation for expanding the scope of our cooperation. This could include the construction of new power generation facilities in India, including small-scale facilities, as well as the localization of equipment and nuclear fuel production," he said at a meeting of the Russian-Indian Intergovernmental Commission on Cooperation.

The Kudankulam NPP project is being implemented under an intergovernmental cooperation agreement between the two countries. Units No. 1 and No. 2 of the nuclear power plant were connected to India’s national power grid in 2013 and 2016, respectively. Once all six units are commissioned, the NPP will meet a significant share of the electricity needs of Tamil Nadu, a state with a population of 72 mln, as well as those of other states.
