ST. PETERSBURG, April 1. /TASS/. African countries are interested in establishing new maritime routes with Russia, Kokou Edem Tengue, Togo’s Minister-Delegate for Maritime Economy, said at the opening of the first International Transport and Logistics Forum.

"We need to open new routes with Russia because Africa depends on fertilizers produced in Russia, as well as on grain, which is also produced in Russia," he said.

"We believe that the opening of new sea routes, new links between Africa and Russia could run through the port of Lome," the minister added, noting that this could serve as an alternative to the Strait of Hormuz amid current regional challenges.

The forum is being held in St. Petersburg from April 1 to 3. It aims to develop international transport and logistics corridors and strengthen integration ties. Participants will discuss digitalization of the industry and the use of unmanned technologies.

The event is organized by the Russian Transport Ministry with support from the government, while the Roscongress Foundation acts as the operator.

TASS is the general information partner.
