By 2035, volumes are projected to increase to 10-12 mln TEU

MOSCOW, February 26. /TASS/. Market participants expect container transportation on the Russian Railways network to grow by 5.3% in 2027 compared with 2025, reaching 8 mln TEU, according to materials for the presentation of the Containers digest prepared by the Institute for Transport Economics and Development (a subsidiary of Russian Railways).

By 2035, volumes are projected to increase to 10-12 mln TEU. "According to market participants’ expectations, container transportation volumes on the Russian Railways network may increase 1.5-fold by 2035 to 10-12 mln TEU," the materials said.

The institute identified the main drivers of containerization growth as the development of logistics infrastructure through the construction of new terminals and modernization of existing ones, the broader use of containers for transporting various types of cargo, as well as the expansion of digital services and the accelerated development of IoT systems in transport.

A high rate of containerization of freight transportation is expected to further enhance the integration of Russia’s foreign trade flows into international logistics chains.

In 2025, container shipments on the Russian Railways network totaled 7.6 mln TEU, down 4.1% compared with 2024.
