Hainan authorities unveil five key development priorities
The province aims to become an innovation hub in digitalization
HAIKOU, February 5. /TASS/. Authorities in China’s southern province of Hainan presented a new industrial strategy for the Hainan Free Trade Port, currently under development, at a recently concluded session of the local legislature (the People’s Congress). The strategy focuses on five key development priorities. These areas encompass comprehensive efforts in seed breeding, the marine industry, space, green development, and digitalization, with the goal of transforming the province into a nationally significant high-tech hub, according to the news portal China News Service (Zhongguo Xinwenwang).
In the field of seed breeding, the objective is to strengthen research centers, seed production, and seed trade. Plans also call for the development of space-based bio-breeding, leveraging the capabilities of the Wenchang Space Launch Site and scientific platforms in the city of Sanya.
The marine industry, one of the province’s strategic pillars, will also remain at the forefront. An ambitious goal has been set to double the scale of the marine economy over the next decade. Plans include advancing deep-sea technologies, constructing underwater infrastructure, establishing six leading and four emerging marine sectors, and promoting the active marine tourism industry.
In the space sector, the Wenchang Space Launch Site has been designated as a driver of growth for the commercial space industry. The objective is to build a complete value chain encompassing launches, satellite manufacturing, and data processing, while attracting international clients.
With regard to green development, the province will continue pursuing an environmentally oriented course, placing emphasis on clean energy. Plans include expanding the nuclear sector, offshore wind power, hydrogen energy and energy storage systems, as well as promoting low-carbon models in agriculture and tourism.
In digitalization, Hainan intends to become an innovation center, particularly in cross-border data flows and artificial intelligence. Key projects include the development of underwater data centers, the creation of computing infrastructure, and the promotion of high-tech exports. The presentation of this large-scale strategy underscores its role as a roadmap for the next stage of development of the Hainan Free Trade Port. Authorities are placing emphasis on technological sovereignty and innovation in sectors where the island holds competitive advantages.
