VIENNA, January 30. /TASS/. Western countries’ panic about the risk of nuclear accidents in Ukraine is far-fetched, Russian envoy to international organizations in Vienna Mikhail Ulyanov said.

"Due to power outages at nuclear power plants under Kiev's control, it was necessary to reduce output capacity periodically. But everything quickly and easily returned to normal. So claims about the risk of nuclear accidents in this context are far-fetched," he said at an extraordinary meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) Board of Governors.

"Operating nuclear power plants can provide their own electricity needs through their own generation. Interruptions in external power lines, including substations, only matter in terms of feeding generated energy into the general system. Any nuclear risks resulting from such interruptions are ruled out provided the operating organization responsible for nuclear safety takes appropriate action," the diplomat explained.
