Moving away from dependence on one industry is Chukotka's strategic task — governor

"We rely on logistics and tourism," Vladislav Kuznetsov said

MOSCOW, January 30. /TASS/. Moving away from single-industry dependence will be a strategic task for the Chukotka Autonomous Region in 2026, where logistics and tourism would be two new drivers of the regional economy, Governor Vladislav Kuznetsov told TASS.

"We can see a strategic objective [for 2026] in moving away from the region's single-industry focus and in forming at least two more profitable sectors of the economy," he said. "We rely on logistics and tourism. <... The main goal here is to build up tourism's contribution to GRP to 5% by 2030, while now it is just 1%."

In 2025, Chukotka developed a plan to create across the region a network of hotels with 360 rooms, he continued. In the current year, the authorities plan to ink agreements with investors, and expect work on new facilities' design will begin.

The second flagship project in this direction is to create a transport and logistics hub at the Provideniye seaport. "We've finalized a competition to make the project's feasibility, which will be ready in May, 2026. Further on, we will insist the project is integrated into plans for the Northern Sea Route and the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor. The goal for 2026 is to attract a big investor to build a new port terminal," he said.

Earlier, press service of the Corporation for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic estimated investment in development of tourism in Chukotka would be about 3 billion rubles ($40 million).
