Amazon submits bid to acquire TikTok — NYT

NEW YORK, April 2. /TASS/. US technology giant Amazon has submitted a bid to acquire the social media platform TikTok, The New York Times reported.
According to the newspaper, the proposal involves the full acquisition of TikTok’s US assets. "Various parties who have been involved in the talks do not appear to be taking Amazon’s bid seriously, the people said. The bid came via an offer letter addressed to Vice President JD Vance and Howard Lutnick, the commerce secretary, according to a person briefed on the matter," the newspaper said.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump stated that he had no desire to ban TikTok and expressed confidence that a deal for the platform’s sale would be reached.
Following Trump’s inauguration on January 20, he signed an executive order postponing the potential ban on TikTok in the US for at least 75 days, setting the new deadline for April 5. He also told reporters that the United States should have the right to claim 50% of TikTok, though he did not clarify what this entailed.
The 46th President of the United States, Joe Biden, had signed legislation in 2024 requiring the Chinese corporation ByteDance to either sell TikTok or cease its operations in the US by January 19, 2025. According to CNBC, the US administration has been selecting potential candidates to acquire a 50% stake in TikTok.
